Canadian researchers have developed drugs to treat diabetic retinopathy

2021-07-01
University of Toronto The team led by Professor Stéphane Angers has developed a synthetic antibody for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy, or reversible common diabetic complications, which brings new hope for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy and other eye diseases.

Diabetic retinopathy is a disease that causes blindness, which affects about 30% of diabetic patients. The main reason is that the Wnt pathway is destroyed. Wnt pathway is a physiological barrier to prevent molecules from entering the retina, which is crucial for the formation and maintenance of blood retinal barrier. When signaling pathways are disrupted or tissue oxygen levels are low, blood vessels may leak, causing eye damage. The antibody designed by the team is to activate frizzled4-lrp5 receptor complex, successfully stimulate Wnt signal in blood retinal barrier and effectively restore barrier function. The team tested the antibody in cell cultures and in different mouse models, which restored the barrier function of mice and corrected the formation of retinal blood vessels.

The study was supported by the Canadian Institute of Health (CIHR) and the government of Ontario and published in the EMBO molecular medicine.
